Study Finds High Turnover of Science Faculty

UPI (1/6) reports, "High turnover rates for science faculty at US colleges and universities undermine efforts to boost student retention levels," according to "a recent survey of the California State University system." The study "found nearly 40 percent of science [faculty] who specialize in education were seriously considering leaving their position." Nancy Pelaez, a Purdue University associate professor of biological sciences, noted that "more than half of [students] entering science majors at universities leave the sciences, and 90 percent of those students complain of ineffective teaching." Pelaez added, "The model of seeding university science departments with faculty who are trained in educational methodology and approaches shows promise for retaining more science majors and developing approaches to reform science education at the K-12 level."
Arizona's Imperial Valley News (1/5, Gardner) quoted Pelaez as saying that "the study highlights potential national trends." Pelaez explained, "There are likely similarities in the career dynamics for faculty with interests in education at institutions throughout the nation. ... Faculty members who specialize in science education are a growing number. Although science faculty with education specialty positions began before 1987, for the group in this study, more were hired after 2000 than in all previous years combined." The survey noted that "of those who are seriously considering leaving their position, however, only a few are considering leaving the field entirely." Further, "the survey suggests the satisfaction of these faculty members could improve with increased training opportunities, reduced professional isolation and improved academic infrastructure to support education research and professional activities."

eTBLAST -- New, Free Search Engine for Medline

eTBLAST is a unique search engine for searching biomedical literature.

It is very different from PubMed. While PubMed searches for "keywords", eTBLAST search engine lets you input an entire paragraph and returns MEDLINE abstracts that are similar to it.

This is something like PubMed's "Related Articles" feature, only better because it runs on your unique set of interests.

For example, input the abstract of an unpublished paper or a grant proposal into the search engine, and with the touch of a button you'll be able to find every abstract in MEDLINE dealing with your topic.

No more guessing whether your set of keywords has found all the right papers. No more sorting through hundreds of papers you don't care about.

When most people use PubMed to search MEDLINE they pick one or two keywords to describe their topic, then browse through a long list of results. When they find a paper that looks interesting they click on its "Related Articles", in hopes of finding more papers like that one. If they find another relevant paper, they explore it's related articles--and so on.

This process of culling long lists of documents by hand makes literature searching tedious and time consuming. eTBLAST makes it easier for you by providing better results the first time, and then allowing you to automatically combine the papers you care about for a second round.

The "Iterate" feature allows you to checkmark the abstracts you found interesting in the first round and combine them all to create a new query.

Results are sorted by relevance, while PubMed sorts by date.

You can save the time and effort of creating a complicated query.

You can iterate your search over several good papers to narrow your focus.

The Journal 'Science' Rejoins JSTOR
The influential journal Science has reversed course and rejoined JSTOR, The Chronicle has learned. The journal and the popular online archive of scholarly publications reached an agreement this morning, said a spokesperson for Science. The journal’s decision to withdraw last summer was the subject of much criticism by librarians and others.

Neither Science nor JSTOR would describe the terms of the new license, but Alan I. Leshner, chief executive officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which publishes the journal, said the changes had to do with price and with linking of articles within JSTOR to other articles. “We’re very pleased about it,” he said.

This site offers advice on video production and posting as well.

To date, SciVee's focus is on open-access papers in biology, but plans on expanding to include other subjects and types of publications.
